20 Actions in 20 Days: Increase funding for research

20 Actions in 20 Days

Surgeon General Regina Benjamin has called on the entire nation to take 20 concrete action steps from the January 2011 Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding to support the removal of barriers to breastfeeding. The United States Breastfeeding Committee is hosting a “20 Actions in 20 Days” campaign to highlight these action steps and implementation strategies.

Action 17: Increase funding of high-quality research on breastfeeding.

The Surgeon General calls for more research on methods to increase rates of breastfeeding among populations with current low rates, the economic impact of breastfeeding in the United States and ways to better manage lactation and breastfeeding.

Two sources of breastfeeding research are the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Carolina Global Breastfeeding Initiative.
