Barbers for Babies: Back-to-School Jam 2019

Our 8th Annual Barbers for Babies event educated our community on infant mortality and ways parents can prevent the issue. The event was held at Greater Harvest Christian Fellowship on August 3, 3019 thanks to Pastor Johnnie Legons.

Barbers for Babies is coordinated by our Fatherhood P.R.I.D.E. program as an infant mortality awareness event, where barbers are trained by Coalition staff on methods to prevent infants from passing away before the age of 1. Barbers then pass their knowledge on to dads, grandpas and other men while cutting their hair.

The event grew in attendance from the following years with 425 people in the crowd and made a tremendous impact on the community. Kids had tons of fun playing in the bouncy house and playing cornhole, and they had nachos and snow cones with their hamburgers and hot dogs!  Fatherhood P.R.I.D.E. backpacks filled with school supplies were given to 300 children to use throughout their school year. Thanks to Dr. Pitts and the Community Barber School, our volunteer barbers provided 42 free haircuts!

Thank you also to Sunshine Health and The Parent Academy of Duval County Public Schools for setting up tables and giving out goodies during the event! A huge THANK YOU also to DJ Bean from Family 1st Entertainment for providing the jams that kept our kids and families dancing and to the Duval Gamerz  truck for allowing our kids to sit in the cool AC and play video games!
