National Infant Mortality Awareness Month

As part of Infant Mortality Awareness Month activities, National Infant Mortality Spokesperson Tonya Lewis Lee will visit Jacksonville on Wednesday and Thursday.

Ms. Lee will meet with physicians and other health care providers at Wolfson Children’s Hospital and UF/Shands Jacksonville to discuss their roles in improving birth outcomes. The theme of Infant Mortality Awareness Month in 2011 is “A Healthy Baby Begin with You. . .and Us – Health Care Providers Take on Infant Mortality”.

Ms. Lee, an avid proponent of breastfeeding, will also meet with staff at Baptist Medical Center to learn more about its support for breastfeeding employees. The program recently received a Gold Award from the Florida Breastfeeding Coalition.

She will tour the OB Clinic at UF/Shands and meet with local barbers involved with the Barbers for Babies initiative during her two-day visit.

On Thursday, Ms. Lee will open the Preconception Peer Educator Training sponsored by UNF, the Healthy Start Coalition and Edward Waters College. More than 50 college students will participate in the training and become part of a national network working on campuses and in communities to reduce health disparities.
