The Coalition is expanding its partnership with the UNF Florida Institute of Education (FIE) to reach uninsured families. The Coalition’s KidCare Outreach initiative will work with schools participating in FIE’s Neighborhood Learning Network (NLN) to identify eligible students through the Free & Reduced Lunch program.
Families will be contacted by phone and scheduled mail-outs. Florida KidCare flyers and other marketing materials will be sent home in the student’s book bags, and presentations will be made at PTA meetings, SAC meetings, planned school events and school health fairs. Follow-up phone calls and contact will facilitate enrollment and retention in the State’s low-cost health insurance program.
Each of the NLN schools will be designated as a CHIPRA Enrollment Site for the surrounding community where all parents can obtain children’s health insurance information or face-to-face application assistance provided by a KidCare outreach specialist. National studies have demonstrated that health insurance coverage reduces absenteeism and promotes positive school performance.
FIE’s Neighborhood Learning Network works in collaboration with Duval County Schools to support family involvement and build community capacity around Title I schools. A key component of the initiative is addressing health and social determinants that create barriers to successful learning. Family Involvement Centers provide support and link families to services offered by other community agencies.
The Coalition also works with FIE in implementing the “Make a Noise! Make a Difference!” lay health workers training at selected school sites to educate young families about infant mortality and promote healthy birth outcomes.
