National Infant Mortality Awareness Month
Breastfeeding protects babies against a myriad of infections and conditions that can contribute to infant mortality, but many mothers don’t receive the support they need to sustain breastfeeding efforts. Some local workplaces — like Baptist Health — have implemented policies that make it easier on nursing moms.
Baptist Health, which includes four adult hospitals and Wolfson Children’s Hospital, received Gold Level Breastfeeding Friendly Employer Award from the Florida Business Case for Breastfeeding project of the Florida Breastfeeding Coalition.
The award program recognizes businesses who are providing support in the workplace to their breastfeeding employees. Businesses are evaluated based on a set of criteria for three levels of breastfeeding support: Gold, Silver and Bronze.
Baptist Health has made all of its locations Breastfeeding Friendly Employer sites. Each location has a private, clean space for nursing employees to pump breast milk, lactation consultant support, reasonable time to pump and discounts on breastfeeding equipment and other incentives for breastfeeding employees.

In 2010, CITI Family Center in Jacksonville received the Silver Level award from the Florida Breastfeeding Coalition.
