Spanish speakers have new web and mobile tools to help them improve communication with their medical providers.
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality launched the “Conozca las Preguntas” campaign in May. Television, radio, print and web ads will direct people to a new Web site that helps patients with the development of questions prior to medical appointments.
In addition to the site, there is also a mobile text service that provides tips and other important health information in Spanish. To access the mobile program, users can text “Preguntas” to 80676.
Hispanics are less likely to visit a medical professional than non-Hispanics and often report poor communication with their doctors. They are more likely to ask their friends, family and coworkers medical advice than seek care from a professional and even when they do see a doctor, are not always comfortable asking questions.
