New nationwide safe sleep Coalition forms

A new Coalition focused on the issue of infant safe sleep has formed in anticipation of legislation that will be introduced in Congress.

The Coaliton Against Unsafe Sleep Environments (CAUSE) aims to bring consumer, non-profit and government organizations together around a common “cause”: sudden unexplained infant deaths.

According to CAUSE, the Stillbirth and SUID Prevention, Education, and Awareness Act will be reintroduced by Senator Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Representative Pallone (D-NJ6) into Congress. The bill, if passed, will provide opportunities to improve Sudden Unexpected Infant Death investigations, data collection, services and prevention.

In addition to partnering with the federal government on a safe sleep campaign and supporting legislation, CAUSE’s goals include:

  • To advocate as a group for infant safe sleep with a simple, clear message.
  • To promote safe sleep environments through strong standards for cribs, bassinets and play yards and to advocate for safe products.
  • To be a repository of materials used across the country (brochures, videos, public service announcements, power point presentations, legislation) to avoid duplicative efforts.
  • To be a watchdog for products that have been/should be recalled for safety issues, or for false claims of preventing SIDS.
