On Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 20, National Health Corp Florida AmeriCorps members participated in a day of service in honor of Dr. King. The members collaborated with the Northwest Jacksonville Community Development Coalition to paint the homes of low income individuals, people living with disabilities and senior citizens.

Together, along with more than 50 volunteers from organizations such as Jacksonville Teacher Residency AmeriCorps, they worked to paint eight homes.

National Health Corps Florida participates annually in the day of service to leverage the strength of local citizens to help tackle local problems and advance Dr. King’s dream of opportunity for all. The annual event honors Dr. King’s legacy and is an opportunity for Americans to renew their own personal vows of civic responsibility through service to others and engage in conversations to advance community goals.

The MLK Day of Service is led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that engages millions of Americans in service through its AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and Volunteer Generation Fund programs and leads the nation’s volunteering and service efforts. National Health Corps AmeriCorps members commit to providing 1700 hours of service over a 46-week term of service in Northeast Florida. Each member is placed within a local organization and fulfills the majority of their service at their site through activities such as conducting health outreach, teaching health education classes, and helping enrolling people in health insurance and pharmaceutical assistance programs.
